Rembrandt’s mother, reading – Rembrandt

This painting was created in 1631 and is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It is a portrait of Rembrandt’s mother, Neeltgen Willemsdr. van Zuytbrouck, who was 62 years old at the time. She is shown reading a book, her face illuminated by a single candle. The painting is notable for its realistic depiction of aging and its use of light and shadow.
