Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 1, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how WhatFonts ("WhatFonts," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you visit whatfonts.com, create an account, identify a font, upload content, contact us, or otherwise use our services (collectively, the "Services").

By using the Services, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this Policy, please do not use the Services.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide

  • Account information: your email address, username, name, password credentials, profile details, and other information you choose to add to your account.
  • Google Sign-In information: if you choose to sign in with Google, we receive a Google account identifier, your verified email address, and basic profile information such as your first and last name. We do not receive your Google password.
  • Font-identification inputs: images you upload, text detected in or entered for those images, and the resulting font-search data.
  • User content: fonts, font information, collections, profile content, community submissions, and other materials you submit or publish through the Services.
  • Communications: your name, email address, message, and any other information you provide when contacting us.

Information collected automatically

When you use the Services, our servers and service providers may automatically receive technical and usage information, including your IP address, browser type, device and operating-system information, referring and exit pages, timestamps, requested pages, error information, and interactions with the Services. We may use cookies, session storage, and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember settings, maintain security, and operate site features.

2. How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • provide, maintain, and improve the Services;
  • create and manage accounts and authenticate users;
  • process uploaded images, recognize text, and identify or rank matching fonts;
  • display user profiles, submissions, collections, and other content you choose to make public;
  • respond to questions, requests, and support messages;
  • monitor performance, troubleshoot errors, and develop new features;
  • detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, security incidents, and violations of our terms; and
  • comply with legal obligations and protect the rights, safety, and property of users, WhatFonts, and others.

Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we process information as necessary to provide the Services you request, based on our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Services, with your consent where required, and to comply with legal obligations.

3. Font Identification and AI Processing

When you upload an image for font identification, WhatFonts stores and processes the image to provide the requested result. We may send the image to OpenAI's API to recognize the text shown in the image. The recognized text is then used by our font-search system to compare the image against our font library.

Please do not upload images containing confidential, highly sensitive, or unnecessary personal information. Information processed by OpenAI is also subject to OpenAI's applicable terms and privacy practices. You can review the OpenAI Privacy Policy.

4. Google Sign-In

If you use Google Sign-In, Google authenticates you and provides WhatFonts with the account information described above. We use Google's stable account identifier to link your Google account to your WhatFonts account. Google's processing of your information is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

You may manage WhatFonts' access to your Google account through your Google Account settings. Revoking access prevents future Google authentication but does not automatically delete information already stored in your WhatFonts account.

5. How We Disclose Information

We may disclose information in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers: to hosting, infrastructure, authentication, OCR/AI, security, and technical service providers that process information on our behalf or help us operate the Services.
  • Public content: information you intentionally publish, such as a username, profile, font submission, collection, or community post, may be visible to other users and the public.
  • Legal and safety reasons: when we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect rights, safety, property, users, or the integrity of the Services.
  • Business changes: in connection with a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets, or similar business transaction, subject to appropriate safeguards.
  • With your direction or consent: when you ask us to disclose information or otherwise consent to the disclosure.

We do not sell your personal information for money.

6. Cookies and Similar Technologies

WhatFonts uses cookies and browser storage that are necessary for account sessions, authentication, security, preferences, and core functionality. You may configure your browser to block or delete cookies, but some account and site features may not work correctly as a result.

7. Data Retention

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide and secure the Services, maintain your account, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, comply with legal obligations, and support legitimate operational needs. Retention periods vary depending on the type of information and why it was collected.

Uploaded images and related processing data may be retained for service delivery, troubleshooting, security, abuse prevention, and improvement. You may contact us to request deletion. We may retain limited information when required by law or when necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

8. Your Choices and Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of your personal information; object to or restrict certain processing; or withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You may also update certain profile information through your account.

To submit a privacy request, use our Contact Us page and provide enough information for us to verify and respond to your request. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. You may also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.

9. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. However, no internet transmission or storage system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for notifying us if you suspect unauthorized account activity.

10. International Processing

WhatFonts and its service providers may process information in countries other than the country where you live. Those countries may have different data-protection laws. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.

11. Children's Privacy

The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If local law sets a higher minimum age for consent to online services, that higher age applies. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us without appropriate consent, please contact us so that we can review and delete it where required.

12. External Links

The Services may link to third-party websites, fonts, marketplaces, or services. We do not control and are not responsible for their privacy or security practices. Please review the privacy policy of each third party you visit.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to the Services, our practices, or applicable law. We will post the revised Policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date. If changes are material, we may provide additional notice where appropriate.
